June 2009

Well, we’ve done it again. The England cricket team, not content with being out for 51 in a Test in the West Indies last winter, have now contrived to lose a 20/20 international to Holland. Not a football match, mark you; a cricket match. So with the Australians coming for the Ashes in a few weeks time the conversation in pubs all over the country is bound to change from being ‘what’s your dream team for the Ashes?’ to simply ‘Have we got a team for the Ashes, or should we ask the pub team to deputise?’

This year we raised a total of £2398.24 for Christian Aid, including
£332.50 from Helen Foster’s Hunger Lunch. This is a slight increase on 2008, which
in view of the credit crunch is very gratifying. Many thanks to all who collected and
contributed.

As a result of everyone’s generosity, the Gift Day has raised so
far towards a new boiler £4353, not including what can be reclaimed through the gift
aid scheme. Thank you for all your support, this is a wonderful result. It is still not
too late for anyone who would like to contribute, please do so using the Gift Day
envelopes which are at the back of church. Flower Festival: The Friends would also
like to thank everyone who contributed to making this such a successful event. We
had lots of new visitors to the Church, despite the weather on Saturday, and many
comments on how warm the welcome was, how stunning the church looked and how
good the teas! This raised £600. The concert was wonderful and raised £1200.
